The impact of education on my life

When I look back on my childhood, I can see clearly the impact my education had on my life . I had migrated to the United States from Trinidad at the age of seven, painfully shy and soft-spoken. Over time, I found my voice and was elected co-president of my elementary school, which boosted my confidence immensely.

In middle school I discovered classic literature and escaped into the literary world every day. While I was disappointed not to make the cut for the gifted program, I was recognized as salutatorian. And so my confidence continued to grow.

In high school I made it into honors classes. I read books that planted ideas in me, which I then adapted to my world. My then-boyfriend, now-husband decided to apply to Columbia University, and my immediate thought was “If he can, why not me?”. Subsequently, I graduated as valedictorian and was accepted into Columbia as well.

Oh, the places you go!

My education has taught me so much more than the subjects I took. I learnt to open up my mind, teach myself, enjoy learning, set and achieve a goal, and go places.

Imagine if shy, quiet, seven-year-old me was told that I wasn’t worthy of an education? Imagine if I had never been exposed to Jane Austen, or if I was never taught to read at all? I would not be the person I am today. I would lack knowledge, experiences and the ability to create a life for myself.

The universal right to education

I want other women to have the opportunity to enter the world of books and find their voice. Above all, I want them to have access to education on Science, Math, History and more, knowledge that will allow them to contribute to society and solve the world’s problems.

Girls who have been denied education are like seeds planted in the ground without access to sun and rain. I believe when we come together, we have the power to be that encouraging, nurturing force to help them sprout and grow.

We are fiercely passionate about education. Our mission goes beyond providing safe, natural skincare. It’s about mothers empowering mothers.

That is why we donate a percentage of our revenue to girls' education and children's literacy programs in developing countries through CAMFED and Room to Read. Together, we can further the education of women and girls around the world.
